Rusted roof vent base leaking through the underlayment on a tile roof in Fiddler's Creek, Naples FL

A homeowner in Fiddler’s Creek in Naples noticed water coming into a closet. The source was on the roof: a gooseneck vent that had rusted out long before it should have, letting rain run past it and down into the home. Here’s what we found and how we fixed it.

What We Found: A Vent That Rusted Out Early

Once we lifted the tile around the vent, the problem was easy to see. The metal at the base of the vent, where it sits on the roof and ties into the underlayment, was badly corroded. Rust had eaten through the metal, so water that should have shed over the vent was getting underneath it instead.

Step 1: Tear Out the Old Vent

A rusted-through vent can’t be patched reliably. Sealant smeared over rust just buys a little time. We removed the old gooseneck completely so we could see the condition of the opening and the underlayment around it.

Step 2: Install a New 10″ Gooseneck Vent

We installed a brand-new 10-inch gooseneck vent and sealed it into the underlayment around the opening so water sheds over it, not under it.

Step 3: Finish the Tile Around It

With the vent sealed in, we set the tile back around it to finish the roof and match the surrounding area.

Why Roof Vents Rust Out Early in Naples

Gooseneck vents are the hooded metal vents you see on many tile roofs. They’re often used to exhaust a bathroom fan, kitchen hood, or dryer. In Southwest Florida they take a beating: constant sun and heat, heavy rain, humidity, and salt air in communities near the coast. When moisture sits at the base of a metal vent long enough, rust can start where you can’t see it, under the tile.

Signs a roof vent may be failing:

  • A water stain or damp spot on a ceiling or in a closet, especially below a bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen
  • Rust streaks on the tile below a vent
  • A vent hood that looks dented, loose, or corroded

A vent replacement like this is a small, targeted repair, and catching it early keeps a slow leak from damaging the decking, drywall, and whatever is stored in that closet.
